Sustanon: Chemistry And Mechanisms of Action
Sustanon is made up of a composite of different forms of testosterone. This means it has the same basic chemical structure as the hormone that’s found inside the body and is produced by the testes. Where it differs is in the attached esters, which are basically chemical delivery agents that dictate the rate at which the active part of the chemical, in that case the testosterone, is processed.
The different esters here include:
- Propionate, with a half-life of 4 days
- Phenylpropionate, with a similar 4 day half-life
- Isocaproate, with a half-life of 9 days
- Decanoate, also with a half-life of 9 days
This means that, due to both longer esters, maximal levels can be achieved with administration once weekly, although the design is supposedly to help multiple peaking after each injection.
Ingredients and composition
Along with what the different ingredients are in Sustanon, the composition also dictates its impact, and the rate of it, as a greater concentration of longer acting testosterone agents will produce a more gradual effect.
The ingredients here would include:
- 60 milligrams of testosterone phenylpropionate
- 30 milligrams of testosterone propionate
- 60 milligrams of testosterone isocaproate
- 100 milligrams of testosterone decanoate
This would naturally skew its profile more towards a longer acting and more gradual anabolic, which will affect the place most athletic or recreational users place it in their plans.
Mechanisms of action
Sustanon would exert its impact much in the same way as any individual one of its ingredients. Namely, by binding to androgen receptors to elicit a change in cellular signaling, in order to boost muscle protein synthesis and nitrogen retention, as well as cause certain cells to produce more red blood cells.
The chemical would also bind to some aromatase enzymes to produce estrogen and DHT, which would elicit some unwanted side effects like fat and water buildup, and skin or virilizing issues respectively.
Because of its slightly more gradual and long-lasting nature, you will generally find Sustanon being included in either programs where the goal is a large accumulation in mass and strength, or in those, where lower amounts are used, in which the goal is slow and efficient gains in lean mass and strength and power.
It may actually be more effective in the former, due to a reported greater potency on a milligram-per-milligram basis, because of a supposed greater level of unbound testosterone in the chemical’s structure.
These programs can last anywhere from 12 weeks to a year.
Common dosing for male recreational or competitive users can vary anywhere from 250 to 2000 milligrams, taken once weekly. Females are advised against its use completely for fear of the virilizing effects mentioned above.
It should be noted that higher amounts are usually only used by those with a rich history of prior anabolic use, as their bodies have a higher number of androgen receptors and they are therefore less sensitive to its effects, and further amounts are needed to continue progress towards their goals.
